Candida

Also called Systemic Candidiasis, Candida Albicans, and Monilla.

{WHAT IS CANDIDA}?

It will steal your breath, your energy, your life as you know it. It is a yeast found in minute quantities along with millions of beneficial B vitamin producing bacteria (Lactobacilli) in a healthy body.

Candida is the term used for an overgrowth of the yeast candida albicans.

This yeast is normally present in a healthy person in small amounts and, if kept in balance, it doesn't cause a problem. When the balance is altered it produces symptoms.

Candida is a dimorphic organism, having the chameleon-like ability to change from a yeast to the mycelial fungal form. The yeast-like form is a noninvasive, sugar-fermenting organism. The fungal form produces rhitzoids, long root-like structures which are invasive and can penetrate the intestinal mucosa like in "leaky gut" syndrome, releasing metabolic toxins, and incompletely digested proteins into the blood stream. This initiates a series of adverse reactions that may cause tissue damage, and a wide range of problems, including food sensitivities and allergies.

{Symptoms}

The yeast imbalance creates a wide variety of symptoms. The confusion in the Immunesystem - by poisons released into the bloodstream- produces symptoms that may seem unrelated. It makes a definite diagnosis almost impossible. Since almost everyone has Candida in their bodies, tests for its presence are useless; and confirmation of overgrowth through laboratory tests is difficult.

Here is a list of the most frequent symptoms:
Headaches
Poor Memory
Fungal infections of the skin that include problems like athletes foot and ring worm.
Allergies
Digestive problems - irritable bowl, gas, bloating, diarrhoea, constipation
Diabetes
Fatigue/Chronic Fatigue
Anxiety
Weight problems
Environmental sensitivities -food allergies and intolerances, hay-fever...,
Mental symptoms- fatigue, lethargy, mood swings, depression..
Menstrual problems
Loss of Libido
Impotence
Joint and muscle pain
ENT symptoms-sinusitis...
weather intolerances/aggravations
Note: Symptoms are often varied and most people don't consider them a serious health concern until they multiply.

{Causes}

HOW DOES CANDIDA MULTIPLY AND TAKE OVER?
Yeast, Stress,
Nutritional Deficiencies,
Sugar Consumption,
Environmental Molds,
Chemicals, Toxins, Air Pollution,
Hormone Imbalance/HRT
Vitamin Deficiency
Antibiotics. They kill off the beneficial bacteria which normally suppress Candida.

Nutritional Deficiencies. Poor diet, poor digestion and malabsorption from gluten intolerance all set the stage for poor resistance to Candida overgrowth.

Use of Recreational Drugs - Alcohol, marijuana, cocaine, heroin, tobacco, etc. These drugs stress the liver, the adrenals, and the immune system. The attendant erratic nutrition further depletes well-being and resistance to Candida.

The Pill. The hormones in birth control pills encourage yeast growth. Cortisone, Prednisone, etc. encourage yeast growth.

Operations, Catheterization, Radiation, Anti-Cancer Drugs, Amalgam Fillings: Some holistic practitioners feel the leaching of mercury from silver/mercury amalgams puts a toxic load on the body, preventing full health and complete eradication of Candida.

Anti-yeast Pharmaceuticals, including Oral and Topical Preparations are producing new resistant strains of these microorganisms. This can lead to recurrent infections that resist treatment and become a debilitating health problem.

{WHO CAN GET CANDIDA}?

Anyone. Men. women, children, the elderly. pregnant women (due to hormonal changes, stress and higher nutrient needs often not met). Women have special problem. The yeast needs food, water, warmth and darkness. The yeast typically starts growing in the intestinal tract and spills over into the reproductive area.

{Do I Have Candida} ?

This is the saliva test to check for candida overgrowth.  It isn’t completely  reliable but can give a good indication of the presence of candida.
  1. First thing in the morning, before anything is put in the mouth (including toothpaste), fill a clear glass with water
  2. Work up some saliva, and spit into the water
  3. Check the water every 15 minutes for up to an hour (you may need to hold the glass against a plain surface to see the saliva clearly)
  4. If you see strings traveling into the water from the saliva on top, or cloudy saliva which sinks to the bottom of the glass or cloudy specks in the water, this indicates an overgrowth of candida
  5. If the saliva is still floating after one hour, you have candida under control
